JOSEPH KRUG DOCUMENTS HIS VISION

Joseph left his vision and his uncompromising philosophy completely documented in his personal journal in 1848, to ensure it is perpetuated in years to come.

PAUL KRUG I, SECOND GENERATION,
TAKES OVER THE HOUSE OF KRUG

Upon the death of his father, Paul Krug I takes over the House of Krug. With the business expanding year on year, the house moves to buildings and gardens on Rue Coquebert purchased by Joseph Krug before his death. It has been the home of the House of Krug ever since.

KRUG WAS GRANTED ITS FIRST ROYAL WARRANT

Champagne exports more than doubled between the mid-1840s and mid-1860s, yet while the sales of Krug grew, Paul Krug was committed to establishing the House's position as being wedded above all, to quality, not quantity.
Krug was granted its first Royal Warrant as a purveyor of wine to Buckingham Palace and many more warrants have followed.

HENRI AND RÉMI KRUG ACQUIRE VINEYARDS
IN LE MESNIL

Le Mesnil sur Oger, referred to, long ago, by Joseph,
is thirty-five kilometres from Reims, the famed of the Champagne villages,
and renowned for its Chardonnay. And in 1971, Henri and Rémi Krug received welcome, indeed astonishing news. Some fifteen acres of vineyards in Le Mesnil had been put up for sale. The brothers did not wait to see the plots; they clinched the deal over the telephone.

EXCEPTIONAL CONTENT DEMANDED
AN EXCEPTIONAL FORM

Henri and Rémi Krug arrived at the conclusion that perhaps, the classic champagne bottle did not reflect the excellence of its contents.
In 1972, they decided that exceptional content demanded an exceptional form.
A new bottle was designed, with a shape which exemplified the House's style.
The Krug Private Cuvée became the Krug Grande Cuvée.

HENRI AND RÉMI KRUG
ENCOUNTER A FINE PINOT NOIR IN AY

The fine quality of the pinot noir from Ay in 1976 lead Henri & Rémi Krug to experiment with Pinot Noir, and produce a Krug Rosé. They would work on a Krug Rosé, totally different to the rosés then available. The brothers had after all, already demonstrated that transgression ran in the family. Based on the same creative spirit as Krug Grande Cuvée, beyond the notion of vintage, they began breathing life into the idea. And so, in 1976, the grapes were harvested.

KRUG CLOS DU MESNIL WAS PRESENTED

Krug Clos du Mesnil was created because the wines from that walled garden were, indeed, so rich that they could be the sole origin of a champagne. "They fell in love", recalls Henri's son, Olivier, "with that champagne". Honed by the savoir-faire of both Henri and Rémi Krug, it displayed the Krug obsession with detail, the care shown to each component wine, the painstaking analysis through time, the process of balance, taste, and blend - and that family instinct again in final composition.

OLIVIER KRUG BECOMES HOUSE DIRECTOR

In 2009 Olivier Krug, already a member of the tasting committee, became house director. He was something else too, the guardian of the spirit of Krug. Olivier is the sixth generation of a family which has created superlative champagne, but, just as the Krug generations before, it is his own passion that provides a driving force.
